Reading the Universe, One Book at a Time

Reading

On Words

Words have immense power.  The ability to read and the availability of books to the general public can make a big difference in society.  Reading can be a source of knowledge and also of inspiration.

In my opinion, the spread of literacy and the increased availability of books to the general public (compared to the past) is a great thing, and perhaps one of the most important developments in history.  By reading, we have access to knowledge.  The achievements and ideas of each generation can be set down and preserved with great fidelity for future generations, making it possible for future generations to improve upon those ideas even further.  We can read books for ourselves and make up our own opinions about them rather than just agreeing to the opinions of others without proper consideration of the options.

Reading allows us to explore other universes while learning about our own.  The imagination of one person can inspire another to think about our world in a different way.  We see in stories a reflection of ourselves and our own world.  The actions of characters can inspire or sicken us.  The writing of an author can make us feel that we are close to understanding the ultimate poetry of the universe.

It is not without consideration that I write these words, for it is the power of words which inspire me.

Ability to Read

The ability to read can make a big difference.  Not everyone has access to an education and/or to reading material.  Support your local library!  Encourage family members and friends to read.

  • Accio Books at The HP Alliance
    • The book drive is once per year, but they have a useful page where you can get ideas for other places where you can donate books.

Attitude Towards Reading

Reading is fun!  Although reading can sometimes be a part of a boring assignment, it can also be a source of great enjoyment.  The trick is to find books that you like to read, which requires time and effort.  Go to the library!  Even if you didn’t necessarily like the books you were made to read in school, that does not mean that you won’t enjoy reading at all.  There are all kinds of books out there in the world, only a small fraction of which can be taught in school.

My tenth grade U. S. History I teacher used to say a little rhyme.

“It’s fun for you.  It’s fun for me.  It’s the latest.  It’s the greatest.  It’s the library.”

[While I cannot guarantee that you will like the same books I do, if you're looking for something to read, consider visiting My Bookshelf.]

Freedom to Read (The Fight Against Censorship)

Censorship is a big issue.  No matter what anyone writes, there are those who are sure to find it offensive, leading to attempts to ban certain books.  The following are websites which I feel have important information related to the topic of censorship and why it is wrong.

  • American Library Association
  • Judy Blume’s Website:  Judy Blume is a well-known author.  She is the author of many books, including Are You There God?  It’s Me Margaret; Just As Long As We’re Together; and Summer Sisters.
    • Judy Blume on Censorship:  Judy Blume’s books have often been targets for censorship, and she has some very important things to say on the topic on her website.  Perhaps the most moving part is when she mentions the letters she receives from children who read her books.

May your reading take you places you’ve never been before,

Ani Sharmin
